About Greater Detroit Old Timers Bowling Association
Our Mission
At Greater Detroit Old Timers Bowling Association, our mission is to provide a fun and welcoming environment for Men & Ladies bowlers over 40 years old. We strive to promote the sport of bowling and offer Annual Youth Scholarships to High School Bowlers through the generosity of this Annual Tournament.
Founded in 1932, the Old Timers comprise male & female bowlers at least 40 years old years’ and experience in the game. The Association has 300 plus members between the ages of 40 and 90+. Bowlers ages Under 50, 50- 59, 60-64, 65-69, 70-74, 75-79, 80-84, 85 + compete for awards in their respective divisions. The winner of each male division receives a watch, the second and third in each division receive plaques. The overall winner will be awarded the Champions plaque. (Must be at least 50 years old). A female bowler will be awarded a watch as the Female Division Champion.
Long-time bowler and retired financial chair of the Old Timers Bowling Association, Ted Kress, said, “For 95 years now, over 300 men have come from across the country to compete with a few coming from Canada. Bowling is the kind of sport you can play throughout your life, from three or four years old on.”
Scholarship chair Gerrit DeMeulenaere said, “We want to encourage the young people to take up the sport. It’s good, clean fun and teaches the principles of competition and good sportsmanship. We also want to encourage high school bowlers to attend college. That’s why we are holding a fundraiser in connection with the tournament.” Scholarships are awarded to graduating male & female senior student bowling athletes selected by The Old Timers Scholarship Committee. Donations to the Old Timers Scholarship Fund for Junior Bowlers are always welcome. The scholarships will be awarded prior to the 10:00 AM squad.
